About This Course

This 8-hour course is designed to introduce clinicians to safe and effective manual therapy techniques including soft tissue and joint mobilization to improve patient outcomes in the geriatric population. There is significant evidence to support the effectiveness of using manual therapy to address pain and musculoskeletal disorders. Unfortunately, manual interventions are often overlooked in the treatment of geriatric patients. This course presents an evidence-enhanced, clinically based approach for using manual therapy with geriatric patients and demonstrates how manual therapy can safely and effectively be applied to this patient population.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the changes that occur in the musculoskeletal systems with aging.
  • Discuss the precautions and contraindications for using manual therapy techniques with geriatric patients.
  • Discuss the common co-morbidities of older patients as they pertain to applying manual therapy techniques.
  • Identify common postural compensations and key structures that need to be addressed with manual therapy techniques to improve function and decrease pain.
  • Select evidence-based manual therapy techniques that are safe and effective to address pain and mechanical disorders for in older patients.
  • Perform select manual therapy interventions to improve function in the elderly patient.
