What is your current setting?

I am a first year Student Physical Therapist Assistant at St. Catherine University. Last fall, I spent a short clinical at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids where I learned a great deal and I hope to spend additional time in an acute care setting in the future.

What are some special interests/special accomplishments in your career?
Prior to attending St. Catherine University, I earned my BA in Health and Exercise Science from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. Within the program, I presented at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research held in Missoula, Montana in 2010 and was a Student Specialist in our Health and Fitness Lab. When I was eleven, I was diagnosed with Primary Lymphedema in my right leg and because of this, I hope to work with Lymphedema patients, providing them with both the therapy necessary to manage their disease and the encouragement to work hard towards great results. Recently, I have gained interest in acute care and look forward to opportunities to learn more soon.

How are you involved with MNPTA?
The professors at St. Catherine’s are great encouragements to get involved within the MN Chapter and therefore I became a member in the fall of 2013. I attended the fall conference in Duluth and plan to volunteer at the upcoming spring conference in St. Paul. I am becoming an active member of the Student Special Interest Group ~ we volunteered at Bridging the Gap in January and it was a great experience! Excited to make SSIG a more regular occurrence in my schooling. This summer, I have an interest in joining the Minnesota State Fair Workgroup. It is a great opportunity to reach out to the public and promote physical therapy.

Why are you a member of the APTA?
I am passionate about Physical Therapy and I believe that when you are passionate about something, you are driven to get involved. Our instructors are great examples of this with their memberships, concentration on research and drive to see the profession move forward. We can only do this by bringing our voices to the table. I just returned from my first CSM in Las Vegas, NV and it was an incredible experience. I met people from many different PT backgrounds, created some awesome new relationships and learned about current issues, new techniques and ways to build my career. I plan to join the Health Policy & Administrative section and the Acute Care section of the APTA over the next year or two.

What other hobbies or special interests do you have?
Quite often, I get the travel bug ~ so chances of me getting on a plane sometime in the nearer future is pretty high. I am incredibly blessed to have family & friends around the country that love to show off their home cities to visitors! Around the twin cities, you’ll often find me at the community center in the town I live in, at my church doing work with the Missions Committee or getting some much needed R&R at home. I love to spend quality time with family and friends, especially dancing around my dad’s house with my little sister and happy hour with girlfriends. I’ve recently had a knack for putting myself through physical challenges and this year I decided to sign up for the Tough Mudder in July!
