State Government Affairs

The Minnesota Physical Therapy Association is the sole organization dedicated to advocating on behalf of the physical therapy profession in Minnesota. MNPTA's legislative priorities include access to physical therapy, reimbursement for services, protecting physical therapy's scope of practice and health care reform.

  • Access
MNPTA is dedicated to breaking down barriers to access, from regulatory barriers in which insurance companies require a physician's referral for PT services to financial barriers such as unreasonably high copays.

  • Reimbursement
Rehab can be an easy target and there has been pressure for payment reductions for PT services during budget deficits. MNPTA will continue to work with lawmakers to prevent further reductions in reimbursement for PT services.

  • Scope of Practice
MNPTA is focused on protecting physical therapy’s scope of practice from threats posed by other providers.

  • Health Care Reform
As health care reform continues to change the way we deliver health care services, MNPTA is dedicated to repositioning physical therapy in the health care system in order to provide optimal patient care and cost savings. You can find in depth information on this in MNPTA President, Craig Johnson's, series, Position for Change.

We are proud to advocate on behalf of physical therapy, but we cannot do it alone. Please consider supporting our legislative efforts by getting involved.

  • Donate
The MN PT PAC is an essential tool in electing a pro-PT majority. The MN PT PAC allows MNPTA to support candidates who understand the value of and support physical therapy. Donate today!

  • Participate in Legislative Day
PT, PTAs, SPT and SPTAs from across the state gather together once each year at the Minnesota State Capitol to promote the professional of physical therapy. This event is typically held in late January or early February. Consider joining us.

  • Become a key contact
Key contacts are individuals who we can count on to contact their legislator when important issues come up. These contacts are critical to MNPTA's success at the capitol. Let us know you are interested by submitting our volunteer form

  • Join the State Government Affairs Committee or a legislative issue workgroup
MNPTA's State Government Affairs Committee is a dedicated group of individuals who help set MNPTA's legislative agenda. The State Government Affairs Committee depends on many legislative issue work groups (including chiropractic, athletic training, and medical assistance) to help better understand how complex issues may affect physical therapy. Consider volunteering with one of these groups.
